Phillip had a lesson a couple of weeks ago on being spiritual and I took notes on it. I wanted to share the main points of the sermon.
1) What does it mean to be spiritual?
John 14:8-10-“Show us the Father and it is enough for us…he who has seen Me has seen the Father.”
8:23-“…I am from above: you are of this world, I am not of this world.”
Phillip said that being spiritual means seeing beyond this life.
5:24-25-“Truly, truly, I say to you, he who hears My word, and believes Him who sent Me, has eternal life, and does not come into judgment, but has passed out of death into life.”
5:26-29-Jesus is saying that the Father gave Him authority to judge on the last day and tells them not to be surprised at this because,
“…an hour is coming, in which all who are in the graves shall hear My voice,”
If you are seeking to know God, that means seeing more than the physical and pursuing what is beyond this life because a day will come, where those who believe in God and those who do not believe will hear Jesus’ voice will come out of the grave.
16:13-15-“The Spirit has come and will guide you into all truth. He will glorify Me, for He will take of Mine and give to you.”
2) How do you become spiritual?
God-Christ-Spirit-The Word (Bible) through the apostles’ teaching
I Corinthians 2:6-9-“We speak the wisdom of God in a mystery,”
vs10-13-“For to us God revealed them to the Spirit, no one knows the thoughts of God except the Spirit.”
What does this have to do with us? By revealing them to the apostles, who recorded them for us in the Bible, the Spirit worked in the apostles and can work in us, too.
Phillip pointed out that the books of Ephesians and Colossians are very similar, having similar messages. One example of this is that both talk about being filled with the Spirit and letting it dwell within us.
Ephesians 5:18-19-“And do not get drunk with wine, for that is dissipation, but be filled with the Spirit,”
Colossians 3:16-“Let the word of Christ richly dwell within you, with all wisdom teaching and admonishing one another with psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with thankfulness in your hearts to God.”
A truly spiritual person is led by the Spirit of God who guides him or her through the word He revealed.
3) If you want to be spiritual-
A. You have to be serious about knowing the word from the Spirit and you will become spiritually-minded
B. You have to reject those who claim to speak for God’s spirit apart from His word. The religious world is confused because it is hearing all kinds of doctrine from those who have no credentials to back it up. If they cannot show you credentials, they are not speaking the truth.
C. You cannot turn to physical props and stimulus to create spirituality. This is so with worship. Some think the right icons-sights, smells can be used to accomplish this but when you are filled with love and thankfulness to God, it is something on the inside. Nobody can take that from you.
D. You have to check and filter yourself with the word of the Spirit. We all need a check every now and then. God speaks to us through His word and we are not God. We have to go to Him.
When you become spiritual, you will see things you’ve never seen before in the world around you. You will think spiritually. You will see that you are so much more than just your physical body and the problems of this life.
