On Fridays, I stop and join a woman in South Africa, named Lisa Jo. She hosts the 5 minute friday, and yes, I know it is not capitalized-and that’s the point. We write for 5 minutes without stopping to check our work-just let it flow freely. If you are used to checking yourself constantly, this will be a challenge but a fun one.
Feel free to join me and Lisa Jo in this 5 minute writing exercise. It may not be as hard as you think and you might find yourself improving as a writer, whether you’re a professional or not.
Today’s prompt is:
A few weeks ago, my husband told me that he needed to go to Baltimore that day. I thought it was strange, since he normally did not work in Baltimore but I trusted him and didn’t worry. He told me that he would not make it for church, that night and I was a little disappointed. I saw a girl from the same school my daughter is going to, home for Fall Break. I was a little disappointed but went along.
After church, my husband called me and told me he was still in Baltimore and would be home late. I decided to stay up late to wait for him. He walked in at 11:00, tired but chipper. A minute later, the doorbell rings. I looked at him-“You must have left your lights on.”
“Can you get it?” he asked.
I shrugged and went to the door and opened it to a girl standing on our porch. I stared at her for a moment, waiting for her to say something and when she didn’t, I looked closer. It was my daughter!! I started screaming and hugged her tight. What an unexpected surprise!
My husband had gone to Baltimore to pick her up at the airport and they planned this little surprise. I was so excited to see her.
Now, what is unexpected in your life. Join me and let me know. You can post your thoughts in my comment box or hook up with the “the gypsy mama” on her website with the same name.
I want to hear your thoughts. 🙂
