“By 1888, the established workforce perceived another threat to it’s livelihood in the form of a huge influx of Jewish immigrants who were fleeing persecution and economic hardship in Russia, Poland and Germany. Throughout the 1880’s, the Jewish population of Whitechapel had increased to between 45,000 and 59,000. As the economic depression raised the spectre of mass unemployment in the area, the Jews found themselves vilified for stealing English jobs…

I apologize for the late publishing of this post i have had company in town for Stephanie’s graduation.
Suspect James Kelly was scheduled to be hanged for killing his wife but one more psychiatrist examined him and found him insane. He was sentenced to Broadmoor Asylum For The Criminally Insane in 1883. He escaped in January of 1888, just months before the murders began.

Jack the Ripper Fact-Fridays

According to the coroner’s reports, the victims were lying on their back when they were attacked.  A possible explanation for this is that the custom of prostitutes at that time was to lay down in the street (sanitary, isn’t it), and raise their skirts over their head.  This would have been an advantage to Jack the Ripper because they would not have seen what was coming.
