Day 14 of the 2011 Wordcount Blogathon and I’m still going strong.
These are my notes on the next class on Philemon. If you are ever in the Northern Virginia area on a Wednesday night, come visit us a Dulles Church of Christ and join us in our class on Philemon.
Philemon class lesson 7
Things Paul did to influence Philemon
-Calls him a brother
-Thanks God for him
-Prays for him, praises his positive quality
-Compliments the saints being refreshed in him
-Calls him brother again
-Tells him he has confidence in him to do what is right before telling him what he needs to do
-Chooses to appeal to him rather than order because he knows Philemon will do it
-Calls Onesimus his child, tells him on. is useful, says to both of them–goes over the facts
-Says he is sending his very heart
-Brings attention to his consent so he could have his own free will
-Offers a reason why he left, so he could have him back as a brother
-Appeals to partnership and asks him to accept On. as a brother
-Offers to pay debt
Ineffective things he could have done
-be demanding
-no justification of past wrongs
– no ref. to the relationship
-no explain of past or future
-no support
-beat around the bush
-leaves it open to Philemon
– doesn’t send him back
Principles for an effective approach
*An appeal, not a demand, is always more powerful
*Appealing to someone’s noble side is more effective than scolding
*There has to be a bridge to expect much of a result
*The appropriate forum is important when the appeal is made
-don’t confuse public and private
-don’t be formal when a personal approach is needed

Up, then down in society
Paul looks at Onesimus as his equal to Philemon. A Jewish rabbi is telling a Gentile what to do. A runaway is going back.
Why and how the gospel changes relationships
II Cor. 5:16-17-“We recognize no man in flesh…if any man in Christ, he is new creature, old things passed away; new things have come.”
Once a Christian, we see people differently.
Gal.3:26-29-Race, economic standing, gender are all the same in Christ.
Col. 3:8-11-“But now you also, put them all aside; anger, wrath, malice, slander, and abusive speech from your mouth. Do not lie to one another, since you laid aside the old self with its evil practices, and have put on the new self who is being renewed to a true knowledge according to the image of the One who created him–“
