These are my notes on this class on Philemon:
Paul Philemon Onesimus
Prisoner Slave owner Slave
Roman citizen Wealthy Runaway (criminal)
Trained, educated Highly regarded + influential Indebted
Rabbi In community he had some position Changed
Single Gentile
Up, then down in society
Paul looks at Onesimus as his equal to Philemon. A Jewish rabbi is telling a Gentile what to do. A runaway is going back.
Why and how the gospel changes relationships
II Cor. 5:16-17-“We recognize no man in flesh…if any man in Christ, he is new creature, old things passed away; new things have come.”
Once a Christian, we see people differently.
Gal.3:26-29-Race, economic standing, gender are all the same in Christ.
Col. 3:8-11-“But now you also, put them all aside; anger, wrath, malice, slander, and abusive speech from your mouth. Do not lie to one another, since you laid aside the old self with its evil practices, and have put on the new self who is being renewed to a true knowledge according to the image of the One who created him–“
