These are my notes on our class on Paul’s Adventures in the gospel

Acts 13:13-52

Philemon-The Social Order Of The World

These are my notes from lesson 4-which I somehow skipped.

*Philemon’s challenge: to go above and beyond-to be just and merciful.  Philemon was known for his love, faith and encouragement.  The gospel keeps digging deeper into us-we never get there.

*The role of Paul: mediator, advocate vs10, 19 payer of debt, like Christ.

Most of the slaves were owned by wealthy, poor sometimes had 1 or 2 slaves-were like a Rolls Royce (more…)

Fewer Words Thursday-Blessings

By:  Holly Green

It’s that time again where I join Andrea on her quest for fewer words in her posts and we invite all of you to link up your post to hers by clicking on the photo.   With as few words as possible, and still making sense, give us a positive message; one of praise.  Here is mine: (more…)

“When God Tests Our Sincerity” by Bob Harkrider

Day 25 of the 2011 Wordcount Blogathon and I have barely slid a few posts in after 11 p.m. but I got them in before midnight.  I think that still counts.  I have been successful, so far in posting every day but have to admit a failure of mine.  We had a gospel meeting this past weekend and I kept trying to copy the ad on the reminder email I received, but every time I tried to paste it onto a blog post, it would not work.  I kept holding out until I could get it right an chose not to just type (more…)

Philemon Class Lesson 7

Day 14 of the 2011 Wordcount Blogathon and I’m still going strong.

These are my notes on the next class on Philemon. If you are ever in the Northern Virginia area on a Wednesday night, come visit us a Dulles Church of Christ and join us in our class on Philemon.

Philemon class lesson 7

Things Paul did to influence Philemon

-Calls him a brother
-Thanks God for him
-Prays for him, praises his positive quality
-Compliments the saints being refreshed in him
-Calls him brother again
-Tells him he has confidence in him to do what is right before telling him what he needs to do
-Chooses to appeal to him rather than order because he knows Philemon will do it
-Calls Onesimus his child, tells him on. is useful, says to both of them–goes over the facts
-Says he is sending his very heart
-Brings attention to his consent so he could have his own free will
-Offers a reason why he left, so he could have him back as a brother
-Appeals to partnership and asks him to accept On. as a brother
-Offers to pay debt

Ineffective things he could have done

-be demanding
-no justification of past wrongs
– no ref. to the relationship
-no explain of past or future
-no support
-beat around the bush
-leaves it open to Philemon
– doesn’t send him back

Principles for an effective approach

*An appeal, not a demand, is always more powerful
*Appealing to someone’s noble side is more effective than scolding
*There has to be a bridge to expect much of a result
*The appropriate forum is important when the appeal is made
-don’t confuse public and private
-don’t be formal when a personal approach is needed

Philemon Lesson 6

Did you know that some of the people mentioned in Philemon are mentioned elsewhere in the Bible?  In class, we talked about these people what Paul says about them in various parts of the New Testament:

*Archippus Colossians 4:17 (more…)

Fewer Words Thursday-Our Persecution Pales In Comparison To The first Century

Day 5 of the 2011 Wordcount blogathon and I am still going strong.  If not for the themes of today and tomorrow, I might be doing some searching to figure out what to blog about today.

Anyway, today is Thursday and it is time for “Let My Words Be Few…Thursday”.  I have joined a sweet woman named Andrea for this effort.  Her blog address is http://hopeannfaith.wordpress.com.  Over the past couple of weeks, I have forgotten to mention the rules and I apologize for that.

So, if you would, join us and put your contribution to this fun feat in my comments box and I will include it.  I have included the rules in Andrea’s words: (more…)

Philemon-Changed Relationships

These are my notes on this class on Philemon:

Paul                                                                            Philemon                                                                                           Onesimus

Prisoner                                                                     Slave owner                                                                                      Slave

Roman citizen                                                          Wealthy                                                                                             Runaway (criminal)

Trained, educated                                                   Highly regarded + influential                                                      Indebted

Rabbi                                                                          In community he had some position                                          Changed

Single                                                                         Gentile

Up, then down in society

Paul looks at Onesimus as his equal to Philemon.  A Jewish rabbi is telling a Gentile what to do.  A runaway is going back.

Why and how the gospel changes relationships

II Cor. 5:16-17-“We recognize no man in flesh…if any man in Christ, he is new  creature, old things passed away; new things have come.”

Once a Christian, we see people differently.

Gal.3:26-29-Race, economic standing, gender are all the same in Christ.

Col. 3:8-11-“But now you also, put them all aside; anger, wrath, malice, slander, and abusive speech from your mouth.  Do not lie to one another, since you laid aside the old self with its evil practices, and have put on the new self who is being renewed to a true knowledge according to the image of the One who created him–“

Philemon-Dissecting The Letter

Background-
The People
Colossians 4-Mentions the same people-“Onessimus, our faithful and beloved brother, who is one of your number.” vs 9
“Aristarchus, my fellow prisoner, sends you his greetings; and also Barnabas’ cousin, Mark (about whom you received instructions; if he comes to you, welcome him)”
In Acts 15, Paul and Barnabas get into an argument over taking Mark, because he abandoned them on the first trip.
“Epaphras,… sends his greetings, always laboring earnestly for you in his prayers” vs 12
“Luke, the beloved physician, sends his greetings, as does Demas” vs14
“Say to Archippus, ‘Take heed to the ministry,” vs 17
-Masters/Slaves
-Imprisoned
-Wisdom/Speech

The Place-
3 places close to each other

The Timing
Paul’s Imprisonments
Caesarean Acts 24-2 years
1st Roman Acts 28-2 years
Philippians 1 indicates release
2nd Roman II Tim. 4-The letter refers to his imminent execution
Most likely occasion is 1st Roman

Internal Issues- Onessimus’ departure vs 11, 18
