Philemon-The Social Order Of The World

These are my notes from lesson 4-which I somehow skipped.

*Philemon’s challenge: to go above and beyond-to be just and merciful.  Philemon was known for his love, faith and encouragement.  The gospel keeps digging deeper into us-we never get there.

*The role of Paul: mediator, advocate vs10, 19 payer of debt, like Christ.

“When God Tests Our Sincerity” by Bob Harkrider

Day 25 of the 2011 Wordcount Blogathon and I have barely slid a few posts in after 11 p.m. but I got them in before midnight.  I think that still counts.  I have been successful, so far in posting every day but have to admit a failure of mine.  We had a gospel meeting this past weekend and I kept trying to copy the ad on the reminder email I received, but every time I tried to paste it onto a blog post, it would not work.  I kept holding out until I could get it right an chose not to just type (more…)

Philemon Class Lesson 7

Day 14 of the 2011 Wordcount Blogathon and I’m still going strong.

These are my notes on the next class on Philemon. If you are ever in the Northern Virginia area on a Wednesday night, come visit us a Dulles Church of Christ and join us in our class on Philemon.

Philemon class lesson 7

Things Paul did to influence Philemon

-Calls him a brother
-Thanks God for him
-Prays for him, praises his positive quality
-Compliments the saints being refreshed in him
-Calls him brother again
-Tells him he has confidence in him to do what is right before telling him what he needs to do
-Chooses to appeal to him rather than order because he knows Philemon will do it
-Calls Onesimus his child, tells him on. is useful, says to both of them–goes over the facts
-Says he is sending his very heart
-Brings attention to his consent so he could have his own free will
-Offers a reason why he left, so he could have him back as a brother
-Appeals to partnership and asks him to accept On. as a brother
-Offers to pay debt

Ineffective things he could have done

-be demanding
-no justification of past wrongs
– no ref. to the relationship
-no explain of past or future
-no support
-beat around the bush
-leaves it open to Philemon
– doesn’t send him back

Principles for an effective approach

*An appeal, not a demand, is always more powerful
*Appealing to someone’s noble side is more effective than scolding
*There has to be a bridge to expect much of a result
*The appropriate forum is important when the appeal is made
-don’t confuse public and private
-don’t be formal when a personal approach is needed

Philemon Lesson 6

Did you know that some of the people mentioned in Philemon are mentioned elsewhere in the Bible?  In class, we talked about these people what Paul says about them in various parts of the New Testament:

*Archippus Colossians 4:17 (more…)
